Sokoto Government Assures Support Following Fire Outbreak at Jarma Academy

The Sokoto State Government’s delegation on Thursday evening visited the Jarma UK Academy, which was gutted by an early evening fire outbreak.

The delegation, led by the Secretary to the State Government, Muhammad Bello Sifawa, also included the Chief of Staff, Government House Sokoto, Aminu Haliru Dikko, mni, and the State Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Nasiru Mohammed Binji. The officials visited the school to assess the level of damage caused by the inferno.

The fire incident, which was said to have occurred at about 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, affected students’ hostels, the Principal’s and Vice Principal’s offices, the computer laboratory, as well as a staff room located on the upper floor of the school.

The inferno, whose cause is yet to be determined, destroyed clothing materials, mattresses, blankets, and other personal belongings of the school’s 62 students.

Speaking shortly after the visit, the Secretary to the State Government, Muhammad Bello Sifawa, on behalf of the state government, commiserated with the management of the Academy over the unfortunate incident that razed the upper floor of the school.

He, however, expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah that no life was lost and no student sustained any injury during the incident. The SSG also prayed to Almighty Allah to prevent the recurrence of such calamities.

Jarma UK Academy was established by philanthropist Alhaji Ummarun Kwabo, the Jarman Sokoto, in 2018. The school currently accommodates 176 students, mostly orphans displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency in Borno and Yobe States.

The Academy offers a blend of western and Islamic education, alongside entrepreneurial skills training, to prepare its students to become productive members of society.
