Sokoto Government to Collaborate with Sultanate Council to Curb Street Begging

The Sokoto State Governor, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, PhD, FCNA, FNCS, has announced that his administration will soon collaborate with the Sultanate Council of Sokoto to address the issue of street begging in the state.

Governor Aliyu made this statement during his meeting with the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, as part of the Sallah homage. He emphasized that new strategies would be developed, particularly focusing on curbing street begging in Sokoto metropolis.

“We will also ensure that we collect data on all individuals found begging on the streets so that we can identify their places of origin,” the Governor stated. He added that one of the key strategies would involve enrolling beggars into Almajiri integrated schools located in Shuni and Wamakko local government areas.

The Governor further highlighted that the state government would provide accommodation, feeding, and other essential services for the students, ensuring they remain in school.

He urged the people of Sokoto to support this initiative, which seeks to transform the long-standing tradition that often contradicts Islamic teachings. Governor Aliyu reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving the living standards of all residents, regardless of their background, and called for the support of parents and guardians to help achieve the objectives of this program.
