Ahead of the Sokoto State Congress of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) today, a stakeholders meeting was yesterday evening held in the state to fine tune arrangements for the smooth conduct of the event. To this end, the stakeholders unanimously concurred that the exercise, apart from being inclusive and in line with the party’s guidelines, will also be held under the strict protocols of COVID-19. For this reason, the state Ministry of Health has been put on standby to provide logistics for the observance of the COVID-19 protocols.
The meeting, according to the state Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal is part of series of consultations and inclusive engagements intended to sharpen plans for the Congress. Gov. Tambuwal told the stakeholders that although the tenure of party leadership in the state has expired long ago, “but owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the national body has extended the conduct of the state Congress about 2 or 3 times. “However, he pointed out that in line with the permission of the national body that the Congress can now hold, it will now be conducted Saturday after the screening and accreditation of delegates at the Kangiwa Stadium in the state capital. Gov. Tambuwal affirmed that in the spirit of democratic inclusiveness the arrangements for the exercise has been widely consultative. “We looked at the Constitution of the party and decided the number of vacant seats. We also agreed that all the three Senatorial zones in the state should have near equal representation,” he said.
Reflecting on the previous Congresses held in the state, the governor said: “There is no human exercise that is perfect. We have witnessed challenges, but in consultation with leaders of the local government areas these have been resolved amicably. “He assured that the exercise will be a win-win one for all party members as all of those party men that weren’t returned would be accommodated in the scene of things as they unfold. In his remarks, the Chairman of the Congress Hon. Ogbuefi Ozomgbachi praised the stakeholders for their previous outstanding outings in which the Ward and Local Government Congresses were a huge success. “Usually we have to stand and clap for stakeholders and the PDP family if feats such as these are attained.
What you have achieved in the past two Congresses is not a small thing. Elsewhere, even where you have sitting governors, the state has gone into disarray as a result of rancor and bickerings, ” Ozomgbachi stated.Observing that Gov. Tambuwal “has ensured, through the arrangements so far made, that there would be equal representation, Hon. Ozomgbachi urged the stakeholders to consolidate on their successive achievements in the Congresses so far held. That way he noted each and every Senatorial district will take its fair share of the positions that would be up for contest and the State chapter would have demonstrated that it is the one to watch and emulate in the national arena.
