SOSG-iCONIC University Poised to Reposition ODL in Nigeria. …to Train 5,000 Civil Servants

A delegation from the Ministry of Innovation and Digital Economy (MIDE), led by Hon. Commissioner Bashar Umar Kwabo and Permanent Secretary Dr. Nasir Daniya, recently visited Iconic Open University’s main branch in Sokoto State. The university, which operates 51 campuses across Nigeria, had previously engaged with the ministry to present its initiatives and explore potential collaborations.

During the visit, Iconic Open University proposed a partnership with the Sokoto State Government (SOSG) to deliver technology-driven professional development programs for the state’s civil servants. These programs are designed to enhance the workforce’s skills, focusing on both digital literacy and professional growth across various sectors. The initiative aims to train over 5,000 state employees, covering a range of educational levels.

Mr. Muhammad Sanusi Gusau, the university’s Registrar, outlined plans to establish resource centers at the Usman Faruk and Shehu Kangiwa Secretariats to support learners throughout their training. This effort aligns with the university’s commitment to corporate social responsibility, contributing to the state’s development and long-term growth.

Earlier, Dr. Shadi Sabeh, Vice-Chancellor of Iconic Open University, presented the program’s budget and offered financial waivers to help ease the cost burden on the state government, reinforcing the university’s commitment to accessible education.

Hon. Bashar Umar Kwabo expressed strong support for the proposal, recognizing the importance of equipping civil servants with digital and professional skills to improve government efficiency. He assured that the Ministry would conduct a feasibility study to evaluate the proposal and ensure alignment with the state’s strategic objectives.

Permanent Secretary Dr. Nasir Daniya emphasized the need for the programs to align with state policies, recommending the inclusion of lower-cadre employees and collaboration with professional bodies such as the Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria (CPN) to ensure quality and certification.

This partnership represents a significant step toward enhancing the state’s workforce through technology and professional development. Inspection was conducted round the University where the Commissioner was taken round some academic and non-academic infrastructure, including the recently completed resource centers. The delegation also included directors and heads of units from both the Ministry and the ICT Directorate.
