The Sokoto State Governor, Dr Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto, has commissioned the N14.1 billion Tamaje Water Scheme, a major infrastructure initiative that will supply potable water to Sokoto city and neighbouring communities.
The Tamaje Water Scheme is one of six major water production stations under the state’s integrated water infrastructure plan. Other schemes in the pipeline include those at the Old Airport, Gagi, Mana, Runjin Sambo, and Rugar Liman all designed to expand access in densely populated and underserved areas.
Once fully operational, the entire network is expected to generate over 40 million gallons of water daily, significantly reducing water scarcity and improving living conditions across the Sokoto State.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Governor Ahmad Aliyu described clean water as a basic necessity and a fundamental right, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to public welfare through purposeful infrastructure renewal.
“With this project, we are gradually turning the tide in favour of access, dignity, and better living conditions for our citizens,” the Governor stated.
He commended Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko for the initial vision behind the project and also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support and national leadership.
“Sokoto is rising, not through promises, but through action,” he reaffirmed.
The Edo State Governor, His Excellency Monday Okpebholo, who served as Guest of Honour at the ceremony, commended the project for reflecting President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” and demonstrating “people-centred governance.” He emphasized that Governor Aliyu’s completion of long-dormant projects showcased both political will and developmental commitment.
The event was attended by top dignitaries, including former Governor of old Sokoto, Alhaji Yahaya Abdulkarim, former Deputy Governors, serving senators, members of the House of Representatives, state executive council members, traditional leaders, and members of the public.
