The Sokoto State Governor, Dr Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto, has commissioned three newly reconstructed roads in the flood prone Mabera area of the state capital, putting an end to years of seasonal flooding that displaced residents, damaged property, and disrupted economic activities.
The commissioned roads include the Acimarai Jumaat Mosque Road to Mabera Roundabout, the 1.32 kilometre stretch from Unguwar Rogo Police Station Junction to Mabera Roundabout, and an 800 metre road linking Mabera Roundabout to the Eastern Bypass.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Governor Ahmad Aliyu described the project as the fulfilment of a key campaign promise aimed at restoring the dignity and safety of flood affected communities. “These are not just roads, they are lifelines. They represent mobility, safety, and dignity for the people of Mabera,” he said.
As part of the state government’s urban renewal efforts, all three roads were constructed with modern drainage systems on both sides to ensure effective water flow and prevent future flooding. The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering the dividends of democracy to every part of the state, emphasising that no community would be left behind.
Delivering his remarks at the event, Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State commended the government and people of Sokoto, describing the Mabera project as a clear example of responsive leadership. He praised Governor Aliyu for prioritising infrastructure that directly improves the lives of citizens.
Also speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Lands and Housing noted that the project was part of the governor’s campaign promises, which have now been sealed and delivered by the current administration under the leadership of Dr Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto.
Furthermore, an elderly resident of the community, Alhaji Aminu Muhammad, expressed appreciation on behalf of the people of Mabera, describing the intervention as historic. He recalled how residents faced yearly hardship during the rainy season, flooded streets threatened homes, and disrupted lives. “But today, with these roads, the story has changed. We are grateful to Governor Aliyu for remembering Mabera,” he said.
The event was attended by top dignitaries, including the former governor of old Sokoto State, Alhaji Yahaya Abdulkarim; former deputy governors, Alhaji Chiso Abdullahi and Alhaji Mukhtari Shehu Shagari; former Secretary to the State Government, Ambassador Sahabi Isa Gada, mni; serving senators; members of the House of Representatives; members of the Sokoto State Executive Council; senior government officials; traditional leaders; and members of the public.
