Gov. Aliyu Commissions Northwest University Teaching Hospital.

Sokoto State Governor, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu, has officially commissioned the North-West University Teaching Hospital, founded by Sen. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, describing it as “a golden legacy that will forever be remembered and cherished by the people of the State.”

Governor Aliyu noted that the hospital represents a significant milestone in medical education, enabling students to gain the practical knowledge necessary to become competent and professional medical doctors. “This hospital will serve as a centre of excellence for clinical care, medical education, and research. It is equipped with modern diagnostic and treatment facilities to cater to both local and regional health needs,” he said, urging the hospital management and staff to uphold professionalism, integrity, and compassion in serving humanity.

As part of his administration’s efforts to strengthen the health sector, Gov. Aliyu announced that the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria (RRBN) has approved an internship training program for all radiography graduates sponsored by the State. These graduates will now complete their mandatory one-year internship at the Specialist Hospital, Sokoto.

The Governor also highlighted other initiatives, including the training and employment of indigenous doctors, automatic employment of nurses and midwives, and the enforcement of a two-year rural posting for all state-sponsored health professionals. “Ensuring quality healthcare is a core component of the 9-point Smart Innovative Agenda, which is why the health sector received the second-largest allocation in the 2025 State Budget,” Gov. Aliyu added, assuring the people of Sokoto State of accessible and quality healthcare services.

The founder of North-West University, Sen. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, emphasized that the teaching hospital complements the University’s plans to offer programs such as MBBS, Nursing, Radiography, and other allied health sciences requiring practical training. He explained that the hospital provides tertiary healthcare services, specialized patient-centered care, and modern facilities including advanced diagnostic imaging, surgical suites, and intensive care units, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mukhtar Umar Bunza, noted that the University has achieved rapid growth in just three years, securing full operational approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) and establishing the College of Health Sciences, which offers courses in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS), Physiotherapy, Radiography and Medical Imaging, Medical Laboratory Science, Public Health, and Environmental Health. He assured that the teaching hospital will provide hands-on clinical experience, exposure to complex cases, and professional development opportunities for staff and students, commending Gov. Aliyu for his exceptional leadership.

In a goodwill message, Prof. Taofeek, Chairman of the Chief Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), represented by Dr. Lawal Bello, assured the founder that the hospital management and staff remain committed to excellence and professionalism, providing students with the clinical training necessary to address complex health challenges effectively.
