
The Sokoto State Government (SOSG) reaffirmed its commitment to prohibiting the sale of alcoholic beverages and other intoxicants throughout the state. Governor Dr. Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto made the announcement during the commissioning ceremony of the reconstructed Shagari Jumu’at Mosque.
The Governor applauded the recent operations by the Sokoto State Hisbah Board, specifically highlighting their confiscation and destruction of alcoholic beverages. He further assured that all Hisbah operations would be conducted within legal frameworks and with respect for human rights.
“I commend the Hisbah Board for the good work it is doing in ridding our society of social vices,” stated the Governor, who called for public cooperation to enable the agency to perform its duties professionally.
Furthermore, the Governor revealed that 63 Jumu’at Mosques are currently undergoing reconstruction at various stages across the state.
He disclosed that Jumu’at Mosques receive monthly cash allocations for upkeep allowances, while Imams, their deputies, and Muazzins are placed on monthly stipends by the state government.
The Governor called on the officials of the reconstructed Shagari Jumu’at Mosque to ensure proper upkeep of the mosque. He added, “Our administration remains committed to executing meaningful projects that have a direct impact on the lives of our people.”
In his statement, the former Deputy Governor, Barrister Mukhtar Shagari, who commissioned the reconstructed mosque, applauded Gov. Aliyu for his infrastructural development across the state.
He expressed gratitude for the reconstruction of the historic Shagari Mosque, which he noted is the birthplace of the renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Abubakar Mahmoud Gummi.
Also speaking at the event, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaid, who represented the Sultan of Sokoto, commended the Governor’s mosque reconstruction initiative, describing it as a noble effort that promotes spiritual growth and community development.
