The Sokoto State Government (SOSG) has unveiled its N1 billion food subsidy initiative, named “Shagon Sauki,” aimed at providing affordable foodstuffs to civil servants in six local government areas across the state. The initiative is designed to ease the financial burden on workers by offering subsidized essential food items.
During a training session for shop facilitators, the Commissioner for Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Ibrahim Dadi-Adare, emphasized that this program is a demonstration of the state government’s commitment to improving the welfare of its hardworking civil servants. He further urged shop facilitators to maintain transparency and adhere to established guidelines to ensure the success and sustainability of the program.
Alhaji Dadi-Adare also highlighted the broader achievements of Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto PhD, FCNA, FNCS’s administration, noting significant investments in infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, and security, all aimed at uplifting the state and its people.
According to the Committee Chairman, Chiso Abdullahi Dattijo, the initiative will begin as a pilot phase in Dange Shuni, Wamakko, Bodinga, Kware, Sokoto North, and Sokoto South, with plans to expand to other areas. Dattijo mentioned that each worker will be entitled to purchase commodities worth up to 30% of their monthly salary, with a cap of N15,000 for subsequent weeks after the initial purchase.
Furthermore, he mentioned that biometric registration and an online payment platform would be used to ensure transparency. “Only registered individuals will be allowed to buy the items, and deductions will be made directly from workers’ salaries through the Ministry of Finance.”
This initiative aligns with Governor Aliyu’s commitment to supporting the welfare of workers, enhancing their quality of life, and addressing the economic challenges faced by the people of Sokoto State.
