Ministry for Digital Economy Attends Sokoto Facebook Connect 2.0

The Ministry of Innovation and Digital Economy (MIDE) Sokoto and its sister agency, the Sokoto ICT Directorate actively participated in Sokoto Facebook Connect 2.0, which was held at Pinnacle Guest inn in Sokoto on Sunday. The theme was ‘Youth Virtue in Social Media’. The ministry sent a powerful delegation that provided moral, technical and operational support to the program.

MIDE demonstrated its commitment to advancing ICT initiatives by actively participating and providing technical and financial support, and ensured a hitch-free event. Ahmad Mukoshy, Founder/CEO of GigaLayer, spoke about the origin of the Facebook platform, cautioned against violating others’ privacy and sharing hate content, urged youth to verify news before sharing, and emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence in society.

In his remarks, Hon. Jamilu Gosta, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, commended the organizers and reaffirmed government support for youth development. Additionally, Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Dr. Jabir Sani Mai Hula (represented by Mallam Yakubu Jafar), highlighted the responsible use of media for sharing knowledge and positive actions, advocating against defamation, and preaching ethical media usage.

Dr. Sadiya Gidadawa addressed the prospects and challenges for girls using Facebook, emphasizing ethical use and the preservation of dignity within Shariah limits. She highlighted women’s roles in nurturing, training, and enriching society as mothers and wives.

Commandant of NDLEA, Eigege Adamu Gabriel FSI, cautioned against illicit drug use and associating with users, highlighting the detrimental effects.

Furthermore, in his goodwill message, Hon. Nasir Bazza, Special Adviser to the Governor on New Media, commended the organizers and urged youth to harness social media for positive impacts such as unity, knowledge sharing, and economic empowerment.

The event included presentation of awards to outstanding social media influencers and other deserving awardees, recognized for their impactful contributions to youth engagement and community development. A member of the Ministry’s ‘family’, the Head of Unit, Digital and Proletrics Training, Sokoto ICT Directorate, Umar Kabir Dan Anini won the ‘Award of Excellence’.

Other high-profile delegates include the Special Adviser to the Governor on Human Rights, NGOs, and Donor Agencies, Hon. Abdulrahman Hassan ‘Dan Almajiri’, renowned International Footballer, Abdullahi A. Shehu, dignitaries, and ministry officials. Cultural dances, drama, and entertaining performances added vibrancy to the event.

Ministry of Innovation and Digital Economy, under the supervision of Honourable Bashar Umar Kwabo, was established by the current administration under the leadership of Governor, Dr Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto to design, promote, develop and implement ICT-related activities, projects and programs across the 23 Local Governments in Sokoto State.
